“Keep silent or say something better than silence.” — Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark)
I am living in Denmark, Copenhagen for over 9 months now and I have been in Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark) this weekend. The museum was very intriguing and ignited my imagination.
Introduction
Against All Odds.
There was a temporary exhibition called Against All Odds and it was about the woman in art. At 19th century, woman were nothing but a subject in the house which highly disturbs me. They were not allowed to do art, even despised by other man. Woman in the north was no exception, they went to Italy, France and Greece to express their art.
There were lots of paintings on the exhibition but I got intrigued by the monuments that looks like from Greece. At first glance, I thought maybe there is a relation between the Ancient Greek and woman but it didn’t take me so long to understand that since the Ancient Greek monuments were, I mean… ancient, they are degrading and breaking. The artists wanted to preserve them through the ages. On that time, woman came. Woman were given this task and they painted the sculptures and monuments in order to protect the art. It is very important that art is preserved against all odds.
They were not only replicating, there were beautiful paintings made by woman as well. You can see below.
