Global Warming and Capitalism
We cannot prevent 1,5–2 degree global increase even we cut carbon emissions now. It has been seen that Capitalism cannot adapt quickly. This has been seen at Covid-19 pandemic.
In 2006, wind turbine usage on the Earth was 1 percent of the total electricity consumed. In 2014, renewable energy sources produced 7 percent of total electricity consumed. According to the IEA (International Energy Agency) report, in 2021, electricity produced from renewables reached %28,7 of total electricity consumed (References can be entered by clicking hyperlinks). These are not enough.
Due to Figure 1, exponential graph fits the most. By performing extrapolation, in year 2025, we will use %72,75 of electricity from renewable energy sources. In year 2026, value will be %91,05. In year 2027, we will produce our electricity fully from renewable energy sources. Can you believe that? I cannot.
Numbers don’t lie. But human can.
There are lots of mechanisms inside a capitalism system. Capitalism is not suitable for change. It feeds from surplus. America imports more than %50 of its oil. Surplus needs stability and stagnant economies.
Also, it is important that they are counting hydropower as renewable source. Hydropower source is highly debatable renewable energy source. Creating dams and releasing water in huge amounts can disrupt flow schemes of rivers. They cause flood on the nearby villages for years in Turkey and aroung the World. Artificial low rates of flow, creates oxygen deficit on the water.
In 04.03.2023, historic treaty about protecting Marine Protected Areas (MPA) announced by United Nations. This treaty will be the key element of protecting 30 percent of oceans. The treaty will require new uses of the high seas, such as offshore aquaculture, or geoengineering to capture carbon dioxide, to undergo environmental impact assessments (EIAs). Treaty creates conference of the parties, which they will work with ocean authorities representing commercial interests.
“That collaboration could limit the chance of declaring an MPA in a heavily fished area, for example, but could also encourage efforts to limit harm to marine life from commercial activities.”
Covid-19 showed us capitalism cannot adapt quickly. Companies, adapting agile methodology for keeping up with change and creating new products quickly. That is the whole mindset of 21st century. If you cannot adapt, you cannot survive. You should respect that and take actions towards it.
