Foundation of AI.
Introduction
2024 Nobel Prize has caused some controversy between public. It has been awarded to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton for their contribution to (directly from Nobel prize website) “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks”. What? For foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning…machine learning and physics? Let’s see.
Machine Learning and Physics
Machine learning lay the foundation for the modern AI technology. If we can now get simultaneously translated videos on YouTube or get important answers from ChatGPT we owe it to Machine Learning. Machine learning basically composed of giving vast amounts of relevant data (relevant is very important word here) to the model and model finds patterns and connection between data.
Background of the Technology
Our adventure starts in 1940s where researchers started to reason around human brain and how it works.
While researchers making some experiments about the brain another idea came from psychology. Donald Hebb hypothesised that gaining knowledge is another term for reinforcing neuron connection.
To test this hypothesis and create something out of it, researchers started to create artificial neural networks that is mimicked by nodes that are given different values, and the synapses composed of connection between nodes.
